Create a Cloudflare account and add a website

  1. Go to www.cloudflare.com and click on the Signup tab at the top of the page.
  2. Create a Cloudflare account by type your email address and password.
  3. Click Create account now to press enter the domain for your website and then click Add Site. It’s not a must to add “www” to the domain. For example, if your website is www.example.com, type example.com.

4. We will scan your domain’s DNS records. This will take approximately 60 seconds to complete. Once the DNS scan has finished, click Next.

5. Select a plan that fits your needs and then click Confirm Plan.

6. A list of all the DNS records found is displayed, including your subdomains. In this process, you can decide which subdomains you want to enable in Cloudflare () or bypass Cloudflare (). Some records, like MX, not go through Cloudflare

If there are additional records you need to add, you can add them here. After you’ve reviewed your DNS records, click Continue.

7. On the last step, you have to given the Cloudflare nameservers for your domain. The Cloudflare nameservers assigned to your domain and listed on this page.

Click Continue.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully created your new Cloudflare account! But you’re not done yet! The final step is to update the nameservers for your domain with the Cloudflare nameservers provided in the previous step.

How to Change your domain name servers to Cloudflare

The steps required to update your nameservers are:

  1. Log in to Cloudflare and make note of your nameservers. You can find the Cloudflare name servers for your domain in your Cloudflare dashboard under Overview.

2. Determine your domain registrar and login to your registrar account.

3. Update your nameserver records to the Cloudflare nameservers.

4. Confirm your changes through the Cloudflare dashboard.

  • It may take up to 72 hours for the name server information to propagate.
  • Status: Active means your domain is properly setup to run through Cloudflare. You’re done!

Review your Website Performance settings

Step 1: Whitelist Cloudflare IP addresses

Once you’ve changed your name servers to Cloudflare, web traffic is routed through Cloudflare’s network. Hooray! This means that your web server will see a lot of traffic proxied through Cloudflare, and in order to allow all this traffic to access it, you need to make sure that Cloudflare IPs are whitelisted and not rate-limited in any way on your origin web server (you can ask about this at your host). Step 2: Review your Performance settings

Once you’ve created your account and added your website, you can customize your performance settings in your Cloudflare Dashboard under the Speed and Caching apps along the top navigation menu. There, you can manage your settings, according to your performance needs.

Step 3: Review your Security settings

The Security Level you choose determines which visitors will see a Challenge Page. When a Challenge Page is presented, the visitor is prompted with a CAPTCHA. Once the visitor enters the correct CAPTCHA, they will resume to the appropriate page. By default, your security settings are set to Medium. To change your security settings, click the Firewall app in your Cloudflare Dashboard.
